You can't hold us down, Jefferson

January 5, 2018

2018 is definitely off to a nerve-racking start with JBS3's announcement that the DOJ rescinded the Cole Memo, an Obama-era directive that made organizations like ELEVATE New England possible. As we continue to monitor the fallout from this terrible decision, life goes on here in the snowy northeast.

Want to help? Here are some ideas to help turn this lemon of an announcement into sweet lemonade:

1. Add your name to the Marijuana Justice Act, which will remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and look to reverse the decades of failed policies that disproportionately target communities of color. Sign the petition here

2. Call your state representatives and use this quick script from Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) on your call:  “Hi, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent who lives in _________. I’m calling because I believe marijuana should be legal and safely accessible. Will Representative _________ make sure the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment protecting state-legal medical marijuana is in the upcoming budget bill?”

If yes: “Thank you! Please tell the Representative that you stand with them and encourage them to make marijuana federally legal.”

If no: “Seven of ten voters believe the federal government should let states manage marijuana without interference, The Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment provides critical protection to state-legal medical marijuana and the critically ill patients who rely on it. I urge the Representative to support the will of the voters and vote for the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment.”

3. Call your senators to tell them to take action NOW, using this script, also from SSDP: “Hi, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent who lives in _________. I’m calling because I believe marijuana should be legal and safely accessible. Will Senator _________ make sure the Leahy amendment protecting state-legal medical marijuana is in the upcoming budget bill?”

If yes: “Thank you! Please tell the Senator that I stand with them and encourage them to make marijuana federally legal.”

If no: “Seven of ten voters believe the federal government should let states manage marijuana without interference, The Leahy amendment provides critical protection to state-legal medical marijuana and the critically ill patients who rely on it. I urge the Senator to support the will of the voters and vote for the Leahy amendment.”
